MICHAEL STEVENSON: DEBORAH POYNTON AND PIETER HUGO
Deborah Poynton is on till the 18 th of February
Deborah Poynton holds her third solo exhibition with Michael Stevenson in January 2006. In recent years Poynton has worked on an increasingly large scale, and this show comprises four canvases each measuring 2m x 6m, painted with an overwhelming attention to detail.
Poynton's disturbing paintings explore the disjunctions between our inner worlds and outer realities. She chooses to depict circumstances that we immediately recognise, yet which, on closer examination, are invariably not quite as we expect. Such illusions leave the viewer awkward and uncertain whether the world is really how it seems. Throughout her work, the vulnerability and loneliness of everyday life, and the isolation of the individual in our noisy and crowded contemporary world, are immediately apparent. The titles of her four new works illustrate these concerns: Safety and Security, For Ever and Ever, Betrayal and Surrender. The exhibition is accompanied by a 36-page catalogue with an essay by Dr Peter Rech of the University of Cologne.
